Nuclear Verdicts Add to Rising Costs in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania families are paying more for groceries, health care and other necessities. One often-overlooked contributor is the growth of “nuclear verdicts”—exceptionally large civil damage awards that increase insurance and operating costs.

In a recent interview with Bill Gillmeister of End the Lawsuit Tax, PCCJR Executive Director Curt Schroder explained that these costs ultimately reach consumers and taxpayers. “These massive verdicts have to be paid by someone,” Schroder said. “They eventually get passed downstream to consumers through the cost of goods, services and especially health care.”

Nuclear verdicts can be particularly devastating for small businesses, where a single excessive award may force layoffs or even closure. The interview also examined venue shopping, its effect on Pennsylvania’s business and legal climates, and possible policy solutions.
