State Representative Torren Ecker is calling for restoring balance back to Pennsylvania’s civil litigation system by enacting fair and reasonable reforms to address ongoing lawsuit abuse. In an opinion column published in the York Dispatch, Ecker made the case for why reforms are needed and how the current system is negatively impacting all Pennsylvania residents.
Highlighting Pennsylvania’s ranking as the nation’s worst “Judicial Hellhole” for the second year in a row, Ecker writes that “recent legal developments, such as changes to long-standing doctrines around liability, insurance and venue have created uncertainty.” Pennsylvania’s litigation friendly environment stands as a deterrent to job creators looking to grow or invest and can also act as a deterrent to innovation.
Importantly, Ecker notes that reforms will not prevent legitimate lawsuits. “Instead they will help ensure the courts remain accessible to those with real grievances while discouraging those who see litigation as a business strategy.”
