Institute for Legal Reform Unveils List of “Most Ridiculous Lawsuits of 2021”

Frivolous lawsuits over candy, coffee, butter, and funny videos all made the U.S. Chamber’s Institute for Legal Reform’s (ILR) list of the “Most Ridiculous Lawsuits of 2021.” Taking the top spot was a suit filed against the candy Tootsie Rolls claiming they “are unhealthy because the candy has sugar and trans fats.”

In a press release unveiling the list, ILR President Harold Kim noted the negative impact frivolous lawsuits have on the country’s legal system and on taxpayers. “At last count, the U.S. spends over $3,000 per household on its tort system, while small businesses are paying more than half – $182 billion – of the commercial liability costs. The only winners are the plaintiffs’ lawyers and litigation funders. The more frivolous lawsuits they file, the more they get paid.”
