Pennsylvania Republicans Ride GOP Wave in Row Offices and Senate; Democrats Maintain Majority in House

The Commonwealth followed national trends this past election cycle with Republicans claiming victory in a number of key races throughout the state. The GOP swept all three row office seats – Treasurer, Auditor General and Attorney General. Additionally, Republican Dave McCormick defeated incumbent Democrat Bob Casey for the US Senate seat.

The results for the General Assembly show that the make-up of the Senate remains unchanged with Republicans maintaining their 28 to 22 majority. The Senate leadership teams also remain largely unchanged with the exception of some lower-level leadership positions in the Democratic caucus. The Senate Democratic caucus selected Sen. Maria Collett to replace Sen. Wayne Fontana as Democratic Caucus Chairperson; Sen. Nick Miller will replace Sen. Katie Muth as Democratic Policy Committee chair and Sen. Steve Santarsiero will hold the position of Caucus Secretary.

While Republicans remain in control of the upper legislative chamber, Democrats were able to maintain their one seat majority in the state House. While both parties spent significant amounts in their respective quests to flip seats to obtain majorities, the make-up of the House will remain in Democrat control with a breakdown of 102 to 101. The inability to capture control of the House lead to a leadership shake-up within the House GOP caucus. The new leadership team for the upcoming 2025-26 legislative session consists of: Rep. Jesse Topper as Republican Leader; Rep. Tim O’Neal as Republican Whip; Rep. Jim Struzzi as Appropriations Chair; Rep. Martina White as Caucus Chair; Rep. Sheryl Delozier as Caucus Administrator; Rep. Clint Owlett as Caucus Secretary; and Rep. David Rowe as Policy Committee Chair.
